Accommodation  Unique Guest-housesStone ShedTree house

The very special Corbelled guest house on Osfontein gives guests a unique glimpse into the lives of the brave men and women that tamed the Karoo

These antique corbelled houses were built entirely of stone and appear only in the north-western Karoo.   They were the first houses built by the early nomadic farmers (trekboere) in the early 1800ís.  There was a shortage of building materials, especially wood and as result the entire house, even the roof, was built of stone.   These stone houses with their thick walls and stone roofs are well insulated against the harsh Karoo weather and are wonderfully warm in winter and cool in summer.

Since most of the corbelled houses had fallen into disrepair, we have decided to restore the one on our farm, Osfontein, and make it available as a guesthouse for tourists so that they can go back in historical time.

Everyone who sleeps here is delighted about this unique experience and wonder, as they look up at the fascinating stone roof, who lived here and under what circumstances in those days.

Inside one finds the original fireplace with a thick yellowwood beam, probably imported by ox wagon from Knysna.   This fireplace now serves as an inside braai (barbeque) area while there is also an outside braai area to enjoy whilst experiencing the wonderfully star studded karoo sky in the evenings.

The house comprises four rooms of which two serves as bedrooms (one with a double bed and the other with two single beds), another as a bathroom (basin, flush toilet and hot shower) and the fourth as a lounge.

The Corbelled house has all the facilities for self-catering such as a gas stove, fridge/freezer, cutlery as well as the basic pots and pans etc.  Bedding and towels are provided.   Candles are used for lighting so that visitors can have a true 1800 experience.

The farmhouse is far enough away to ensure privacy, but within walking distance if you need anything or would like to enjoy the pool.

Guests are welcome to make use of the many kilometres of  farm roads and trails for hiking or biking.
